The plates depict fashionable styles of dress for men, women and children, and constitute valuable source material on the history of dress during this period in history.

In addition to the resources listed here, fashion plates, portraits, and period illustrations are an excellent resource. The most notable 18th/19th century publishers of fashion plates are: Ackermann's Repository of Arts, La Belle Assemblée, and Journal des Dames et des Modes.
